What is AndyStrapz?

AndyStrapz was started in 1997 when Andy "Strapz" White (a rider of 35+ years) was working at his senior emergency nurse job and got tired of bungee straps causing permanent eye injuries. This prompted him to create a different kind of strap using hook and loop fasteners and wide 50mm stretch webbing. The company AndyStrapz was then born with his first iteration of the Flat Strapz

What does AndyStrapz make?

AndyStrapz manufactures a diverse range of products that include motorcycle straps and rack systems. I will focus on the straps instead of the pannier support systems, which are bike-dependent. They seem decently made however and are designed for lightness, as can be seen here.
  • Flat Strapz
  • Piggy Back Strapz
  • Smart Strapz
  • Adapta Strapz
All of AndyStrapz straps feature very wide two-inch wide elastic straps and most include hook and loop fasteners (think velcro) for closing and holding the straps.

Flat Strapz

Andys first idea and the start of it all, the Flat Strapz.
    • Two-inch wide elastic strap
    • Hook and loop fastener
    • packed in pairs
    • Wrap them around an item and an anchor point

A small doodle of how the Flat Strapz holds onto a load. It consists of a single length of elastic strapping with hook and loop (Velcro) to hold it tight. There are hand holds on both ends to assist in tightening.

Piggy Back Strapz

Similar to the Flat Strapz but with an additional strap attached to it to allow for other items to be added without unstrapping the main load.
    • Great for holding your camping gear and allowing you to stow more gear without disturbing it
    • 50mm stretch webbing with hook and loop (Velcro) attaching
    • Same as a Flat Strap with an additional loop sewn on.

Smart Strapz

Features strap "legs" that you mount to points. the Velcro enclosure then becomes just an enclosure and you no longer have to wrap it around the luggage and the mount entirely. must ladder lock the strap every time you move to another mounting point.
    • 50mm Elastic Strap Webbing
    • Open and close on the top of the load
    • Leather pads to protect the bodywork
    • Combination of stretch webbing, hook and loop fasteners, non-slip Ladder-Loc buckle system
    • Can be readjusted and tensioned quickly

The Smart Strapz features two independent ladder lock mounting points with the elastic strap acting as an access point. The ladder lock helps tension the whole system

Adapta Strapz

Adapta Strapz are the newest strap offering from AndyStrapz. They feature the same green 50mm elastic webbing but remove the hook and loop fastening system in favor of buckles and a ladder lock system (Think ROK Straps but with wider elastic).
    • 50mm elastic web saddle
    • Quick-release slide buckle allows easy release and retention
    • Soft leather pads to protect paint, complete with reflective strip
    • Nylong webbing can fit through small 25x3mm gaps to secure luggage.

Hook and Loop Strength

I keep mentioning these hook and loop fasteners, what are they?! Hook and loop fastening is essentially how Velcro works. It's a series of hard hooks and soft nylon loops. How strong can this stuff be? How can you be sure it's going to hold up to the rigors of riding let alone offroad and adventure riding? Let's find out.
Let's find out why something that can be so easy to tear off and reapply can also hold your luggage tight to the bike.

It all has to deal with shear and peel/pull forces. When you pull apart Velcro you use a peel or pull method to separate the hooks from the loops along the leading edge. Shear forces use all the hooks and loops together to prevent separation. \

But that's a lot of talk! Let's find out how much is needed to hold 100 lbs of force.
According to Velcro, their hook and loop system can hold up to 14 lbs per square inch of material. This means that a 1x1 square of the material can hold up to 14 lbs of weight. Similarly, a 2x4 inch section can hold up to 114lbs. With this large amount of hook and loop fastener, your load will stay put, no matter the terrain you're on.

Where are they made?
